The Story Behind Esther’s House

Esther’s House was born out of love, loss, and legacy. My grandmother Esther was more than a grandmother to me—she was my mother, my rock, and the one who raised me. When I lost her in 1974, it devastated me as a young boy. The pain was so deep that I couldn’t even stay in the same home surrounded by her belongings—I had to be sent away to California for a time. That loss left a scar on me, but it also left a powerful imprint: the memory of who she was and how she lived.

Esther was a beautiful, strong, and compassionate woman. She didn’t just talk about love—she lived it. I vividly remember her taking homeless men off the street, bathing them, clothing them, feeding them, and treating them with dignity. She showed me what true charity looks like. She embodied what it means to care for the broken, to serve the needy, and to love people right where they are.

It is in honor of her memory—and the seed she planted in me—that I envision Esther’s House.

The Purpose of Esther’s House

Esther’s House is not about pointing fingers at society’s failures or trying to solve homelessness in one big step. It’s about providing what my grandmother once provided: compassion, dignity, and a place of rest.

Homelessness is one of the most visible struggles in our communities today. We see men, women, and even children trying to survive in the streets. Many face addictions, mental health battles, and broken systems that fail them. Yet, in their survival, there is a resilience that reflects the grace of God—He sustains them day by day even when they have nothing.

Esther’s House is designed to be a pit stop in the wilderness—a place where the homeless can come to rest, refresh, and recover. Not a long-term solution, but a sanctuary that offers:

  • Basic Needs: Food, showers, laundry facilities, and a safe place to rest.

  • Compassionate Care: People who won’t judge them for their situation but love them as they are.

  • Spiritual Support: Prayer, encouragement, and the Word of God to feed not just the body, but the soul.

Just as Jesus not only preached but also fed, healed, and served the people, Esther’s House will meet both physical and spiritual needs.

Starting Small, Building Strong

This vision does not begin with a giant facility—it begins with one small house. A humble beginning in a central area where homelessness is most visible.

  • A laundry room where someone can wash their clothes.

  • A bathroom and showers to regain dignity and cleanliness.

  • A room with a few beds for short rest.

  • A kitchen where food can be served daily.

  • A prayer space where people can find peace and encouragement.

From one house, God can multiply. Just as my grandmother’s acts of kindness reached one life at a time, Esther’s House will grow to reach many.

Why Now

Because the need is urgent. Because every day, people suffer in the streets without basic dignity. Because I carry the memory of my grandmother’s love like a fire in my heart. Esther’s House is not just a program—it’s a legacy. It is love in action. It is faith with works. It is the continuation of a woman’s mission to care for the broken and a reflection of God’s heart for His children.
